Nosh and Drash

A nosh+drash consists of lunch after services, followed by some type of learning for an hour or so (the topic can be anything you think might be of interest to some segment of the membership). We attempt to have a nosh+drash 4 times a year.

Things to consider when you're planning a nosh+drash:

Before the nosh+drash:

Reserve the date and the building:

Arrange for lunch

  • Work with the Kiddush Coordinator to order food for 80-100 people.
  • There's $???? budgeted for lunch for a nosh+drash in addition to the $300 for a regular kiddush.
  • If we're having food that we want to eat warm, arrange for the warming oven to turn itself on at 9:30am on the day of the event.

Make sure there are enough utensils, cups, and drinks.

Work with the Storganizer (Storage Room Coordinator) to make sure there are enough plates, cups, napkins, flatware, and drinks for 100 people.

No drash during services.

Work with the Drash Committee Chairs to make sure no darshan is scheduled for that Shabbat, or if there's already a drashan, to try to get the darshan to switch for another Shabbat. Switching might not be possible, of course, and that's OK.

Send an email to the kahal announcing the nosh+drash

  • Send it about a month before the nosh+drash, or as soon as the date and topic are set, if it's than a month.
  • Include a summary of the topic (as  the presenter for this)
  • Include a request for extra help with
    • lunch set-up and clean-up (in addition to the people who have kiddush set up and clean up)
    • turning over the sanctuary after services
    • returning the sanctuary to its usual state after the n+d
  • Resend once or twice between then and the day of the n+d, but especially the week before

The day before the nosh+drash

Arrange the serving tables in the MPR the way you want them.

On the day of the nosh+drash:

Load the warming oven

If we're heating up food, load it into the warming oven as soon as possible in the morning.

Setting up and cleaning up lunch

  • Put tablecloths on the serving tables
